    Friday Favourites :: 11 March

    March 11, 2022 /

    Now I know it is hardly original, but we are absolutely loving Greek Myths right now. I mean, they are having a moment, right?Our daughter recently spotted an ad for an exhibition at the National Museum of Australia about the Ancient Greeks and was keen to check it out, which we told her we could absolutely do, and suggested that we study up on some of the Greek myths first. So, for the past few weeks we’ve been listening to a podcast we found called Greeking Out by National Geographic Kids which retells the myths in a kid friendly way, and our daughter is LOVING it! (Like, she picks it…

    Friday Favourites :: 4 February

    February 4, 2022 /

    Happy Friday! How many guesses do you need to figure out what’s on my favourites list this week? Haha! Look, it’s not that I’m ever busting for school to go back. In fact, I’m a bit the opposite – I always feel like the holidays whizz past so quickly, and end up wishing we had just a little bit longer. Especially the summer holidays, with lazy mornings and long, warm evenings where it’s late past bedtime, and all the things with pack in with birthdays and visits and who knows what else. But I have to admit that this week I’m feeling good about having some routine back in our…

    BOOK STACK :: Keeping the kids entertained

    December 28, 2021 /

    Now that the excitement of Christmas is starting to settle (although, full disclosure, I like to keep it going for the full 12 days through to 6 Jan!) we’re starting to think about settling into school holidays. Like many people around the country – and the world I guess – we’re laying pretty low right now, and between mostly hanging about home and my partner and I being back ‘at’ work (from home) next week we are looking for things to keep our daughter entertained through the next few weeks that aren’t just screen based. Obviously I’m throwing books at her left right and centre, and so I thought I’d…

    Christmassy :: Q&A :: Samone Amba

    December 12, 2021 /

    I feel like there has been some really outstanding Aussie middlegrade coming out this year, and one of the titles I have on my TBR that looks fantastic is Samone Amba’s debut novel The Good Times of Pelican Rise: Save the Joeys. This one looks like perfect school holiday reading for kids heading into or just coming out of grade 5 or 6… Grade sixers Sunday Moon and her besties Ockie, Kirra and Lottie are MAROONED in after-school care at Club Koala with the karaoke-loving grade twos and nit-infested preppies for company. It’s not exactly the way these legends thought they’d be ending their time at Pelican Rise Primary!But after…

    Christmassy :: Books for Young Readers

    December 4, 2021 /

    Popping in quickly today to share a stack of Christmassy books for young readers – junior and newly independent readers through middle grade. There are more fab Christmas kids’ books coming out each year, and these are by no means the only great ones out there, but htey are some we have read and loved. A Boy Called Christmas by Matt Haig.This must just about be the most recommended book here on my blog. If you haven’t checked it out yet perhaps now is the time, as the movie adaptation has just come out. I think I mention every time that we love the audio book of this one too…

    Friday Favourites :: 5 November

    November 5, 2021 /

    Hello! Happy Friday! It is proper spring weather here this week – warm and sunny some days, and pouring rain the others. My garden is super happy about it, and I have to admit that I’m quite partial to a rainy day too (especially if I don’t have to leave the house!) We’ve had a fairly quiet week, with lots of little lovely moments – I went for brunch with friends and into a bookshop for the first time since August, we’re back in our school routine, and last Sunday we pulled out some board games to play together (something that will probably pop up again another time, since we’re…

    KIDLIT :: The Super Adventures of Ollie and Bea :: Renée Treml

    November 3, 2021 /

    Ollie is an owl who wears glasses. And Bea is a bunny with very big feet. They don’t know it yet, but they are about to be best friends. Can they help each other to find their OTTER-LY awesome inner superhero? My 7 year old is absolutely devouring books at the moment, and The Super Adventures of Ollie and Bea have been firm favourites, re-read several times over already. They are such fun, sweet books, that deal with situations kids will be familiar with like making new friends and trying new things. The simple text and big bright illustrations makes these perfect for newly independent readers, and they are full…

    What’s your kid reading :: October

    October 5, 2021 /

    My seven year old is loving reading more that ever right now, and I thought it would be fun to share what’s she’s reading (especially since the covers coordinate so well haha). Me, Microbes & I by Phillip BuntingMy daughter ADORES reading nonfiction – she is always picking up something fact-filled and telling us all about what she learned. With all the talk of viruses and vaccines right now she has had a lot of questions. I was hoping that this one would help with some of that, and it has been absolutely perfect! Alongside the info about viruses, it covers bacteria and other kinds of microbes, as well as…

    Friday Favourites :: 17 Sept

    September 19, 2021 /

    Hello! Here we are, a little over halfway through September! This has been a big week – last week of term 3 for my 7 yr old, and week 5 of our lock down, which has been extended for 4 more weeks. I’m still finding it tricky to get into a reviewing routine, but I have been reading loads! The first 14 entries for the Aurealis category I’m judging arrived this week, and it has been exciting to see what’s coming in and get stuck into some of that reading. I already touched a bit on this earlier in the week when I popped up a mini review of The…

    #KidLit :: Seasons in the City :: Megan McKean

    September 7, 2021 /

    My 7 year old has been super interested in learning more about different parts of the world lately – I think she has been quite inspired by seeing the flags and hearing about so many different countries when we’ve been watching the Paralympics and Olympics. In any case, when my friend Barbie from Living Arts Canberra posted on Instagram about Seasons in the City by Megan McKean I had a feeling it would be a hit and ordered it right away. (You can listen to Barbie and Megan chat about the book on the Living Arts Canberra website here). This beautiful picture book is split into the four season, and…

I read @laurenkeeganwriter’s ALL THE BEES IN THE H I read @laurenkeeganwriter’s ALL THE BEES IN THE HOLLOWS 🐝 last weekend - and loved it! It was the perfect novel to take on my bus trip to Melbourne. I enjoy historical fiction novels so much (especially when they centre around the stories of women) and I find Lauren’s writing both incredibly beautiful and super immersive - I felt like part of the small community the book is set within and was completely caught up in the story. All the Bees in the Hollows is Lauren’s debut novel - I also adored her second book, The Woman in the Seal Skin, which I read earlier this year!
I can’t wait to see what she writes next 🤩🐝🦭
Spending the weekend in Melbourne meant I was face Spending the weekend in Melbourne meant I was faced with the age old dilemma of how many books to pack. I was away from Friday morning to Sunday night and took these three:
🐝 All the Bees in the Hollows by @laurenkeeganwriter
💫 Time Travel for Beginners by @jaclynmoriarty
🧊 Under Story by @chloekbenjamin

Are three books too many for a three-day trip? In my defense, I has 8 hours of bus travel on Friday, and was part through Time Travel already - I finished right on the halfway mark of the bus ride (adored it - everyone MUST read) and read most of All the Bees in the Hollows before I arrived. Then I made decent progress on Under Story while I waited for my flight!

How many books do you pack for a weekend away?
