Author chat: Summer reading & writing with Camille Booker

    March 11, 2025 /

In January I had the pleasure of (virtually) chatting with a few Aussie writers about their summer reading and writing plans. Somehow the weeks have whizzed past without me sharing more than my first chat with lovely Laura Irvine, which you can see here. As we move into March and wave goodbye to the last of the warm weather (soon, I hope – we’re expecting mid-30s on the weekend!) I’m keen to hang on to the summer reading vibes and share more of these chats, starting tonight with Camille Booker who has a brand new novel, The Woman in the Waves out today! Check out our Q&A below and then…

Author Chat: Summer reading & writing with Laura Irvine

    January 25, 2025 /

One of the things I love about summer is the way that the longer days and lightened load of school and extra-curricular responsibilities lends itself to a slower pace and more time to sink into some of the books I’ve been hoarding during the year. I know I’m not alone in loving a good summer reading session, so I thought it might be fun to chat with some authors about their summer reading and writing plans. I reached out to a few writers and was delighted that they were keen to be included in a little summer series. Keep your eyes out for a new chatty author post every few…

Behind the scenes with Aussie author Sophie Green

    August 14, 2023 /

I first came across Australian author Sophie Green when I was lucky enough to receive a copy of her debut novel The Inaugural Meeting of the Fairvale Ladies Book Club for review in 2017, and she immediately became a ‘must-buy’ author for me. Green’s fifth novel, Weekends with the Sunshine Gardening Society was released recently (I loved it – you can check out my review here) and today I’m delighted to be able to share a little peek behind the scenes of Green’s writing and inspiration through a Q&A. Big thanks to Hachette and Benson PR! In a sentence, please tell us what Weekends with the Sunshine Gardening Society is…

Q&A with Aussie kids’ writer Bethany Loveridge

    December 23, 2022 /

I know I’ve said it before, but one of my favourite things about social media is making new friends with people all over the country and world that have similar interests. Today I’m excited to be chatting with one of my Instagram friends Bethany Loveridge, a fellow fan of middle grade books and aspiring author. Bethany’s Instagram account is always packed with amazing recommendations for readers 8-12 (ish) – she reads for pleasure but also for research for her own writing, and the breadth of her reading is evident from the range of books that pop up on her page. Bethany is currently working on a manuscript, which I happen…

Q&A with Aussie kids author Jeremy Lachlan

    December 17, 2022 /

I’ve been reading more and more middlegrade/children’s fiction novels by Aussie authors over the past few years – as my daughter grows our reading tastes seem to be coming closer to each other and this year it’s the category I’m judging for the Aurealis Awards. There are soooo many amazing Aussie kids books and authors – literally someone for every reader to love – and one of my favourite series for kids who love adventure books is Jeremy Lachlan’s Jane Doe Chronicles. Today I’m lucky enough to have Jeremy as a guest here on my blog, chatting about his books and reading and summer. Read on for our chat, and…

Q&A :: Kate Schumacher :: Shadow of Fire

    August 29, 2022 /

Towards the end of June I was lucky enough to be part of an Instagram tour for a fantastic new fantasy novel, Shadow of Fire by Aussie indie author Kate Schumacher. I thought the book looked good before I read it (you know me- I’m not going to pick something up if I don’t think it looks good) but I was honestly blown away by how much I loved it. Kate is busily working on book 2, Heart of Flame (which I absolutely can’t wait for) and kindly took some time out to chat with me about her books and writing. Check it out below.*** Hi Kate! First I just…

Author Chat :: Summer Reading :: Sarah Armstrong

    January 31, 2022 /

Today it’s my pleasure to be joined by another fellow middlegrade reader, author Sarah Armstrong. Sarah was kind enough to chat with me about summer reading and also shared some of her favourite middlegrade books. Check out our chat below… Hey Sarah! Thanks so much for taking the time to chat with me today! First of all, I’d love to know what’s your favourite thing about summer? I love heading over to Brunswick Heads beach first thing in the morning. There’s nothing like a salty swim and some sand between the toes to start the day on the right note. I love it when it’s overcast and the sea is…

I read @laurenkeeganwriter’s ALL THE BEES IN THE H I read @laurenkeeganwriter’s ALL THE BEES IN THE HOLLOWS 🐝 last weekend - and loved it! It was the perfect novel to take on my bus trip to Melbourne. I enjoy historical fiction novels so much (especially when they centre around the stories of women) and I find Lauren’s writing both incredibly beautiful and super immersive - I felt like part of the small community the book is set within and was completely caught up in the story. All the Bees in the Hollows is Lauren’s debut novel - I also adored her second book, The Woman in the Seal Skin, which I read earlier this year!
I can’t wait to see what she writes next 🤩🐝🦭
Spending the weekend in Melbourne meant I was face Spending the weekend in Melbourne meant I was faced with the age old dilemma of how many books to pack. I was away from Friday morning to Sunday night and took these three:
🐝 All the Bees in the Hollows by @laurenkeeganwriter
💫 Time Travel for Beginners by @jaclynmoriarty
🧊 Under Story by @chloekbenjamin

Are three books too many for a three-day trip? In my defense, I has 8 hours of bus travel on Friday, and was part through Time Travel already - I finished right on the halfway mark of the bus ride (adored it - everyone MUST read) and read most of All the Bees in the Hollows before I arrived. Then I made decent progress on Under Story while I waited for my flight!

How many books do you pack for a weekend away?
