Currently Reading :: My Royal Story: Catherine of Aragon by Alison Prince

    October 28, 2022 /

This is a “currently reading” post with a difference today – I love seeing what kids are reading, so I thought it would be fun to share what my almost 9yr old has brought home from the library this week. We saw SIX The Musical when it was here in Canberra and she has been Tudor queen obsessed ever since, so she was very excited to come across some books about the Tudors at the school library. This week’s selection is My Royal Story: Catherine of Aragon – check out the blurb below! xo Bron My Royal Story: Catherine of Aragon CATHERINE OF ARAGON is a thrilling story-diary set among…

Currently Reading :: The Wintrish Girl by Melanie La’Brooy

    October 17, 2022 /

I know I keep talking about how obsessed I am with ‘middlegrade’ books at the moment, but honestly, spending any time in the “older readers” section of my local bookshop has me wanting to take a year off work to read them all. I thought I’d pop in tonight and share my current read, because after only 2 days I’m just over halfway through the 400+ pages of Melanie La’Brooy’s The Wintrish Girl, and I absolutely loving it so far. Also, can we please take a moment to admire that gorgeous cover? The illustration is by Lili Uivel, and I love it. I feel like every time I think I’ve…

Book Stack :: Spooky Reads for Kids

    October 13, 2022 /

Obviously October is the perfect time for all things spooky, and this year I’ve got a little collection of kids’ books I’ve been saving to read in the lead-up to Halloween. You’ve already heard me talk (maybe more than once) about A Girl Called Corpse by Reece Carter (you can see my review here) – today I’ve pulled together a few other books I haven’t read yet but am hoping to get to really soon, and that I think would make great softly spooky reading for the 8+ yr old readers in your life. These are all books that I’ve bought myself for our shelves (in fact, I accidentally bought…

Review :: A Girl Called Corpse by Reece Carter

    October 5, 2022 /

I’m so excited to finally be sharing my review of Reece Carter’s debut children’s fantasy novel, A Girl Called Corpse, which hits shelves today. I have been looking forward to this one from when it was first announced and busting to talk with fellow kids’ book lovers since I was lucky enough to get my eyes on a super early copy (you can see my preview here). What is Reece Carter’s A Girl Called Corpse about? Find the thing the Witches call a treasure,’ says Old Man, ‘and you’ll get back all those memories you’re missing.’ With a body made of wax, seaweed for hair and polished abalone shells for…

    August 23, 2022 /

I might have already said here that I really think middlegrade books (ie for readers 8 to 12, ish, sometimes called “older readers” in book shops) are having a moment right now. I feel like the Aussie middlegrade space in particular is so exciting – there are so many amazing looking titles out and coming out soon. Also, on a more personal note, it’s kind of perfect timing for me as my daughter turned 8 this year so we are enjoying a lot of these fab titles together. The latest fab Aussie middlegrade title to arrive at our place is this one – The Dangerous Business of Being Trilby Moffat,…

The amazing books just keep coming, don’t they?! I feel like there are soooo many titles coming out at the moment, and a bunch this week that are on my ever-growing tbr. I wanted to pop in today to share a sneak peek at two new Aussie kids’ books by First Nations writers that are out this week from Allen & Unwin (who kindly sent me free copies for review) – Wylah The Koorie Warrior: Guardians by Jordan Gould and Richard Pritchard, and My Spare Heart by Jared Thomas. I’m hoping to get to reading and reviewing these ones in the next week, so keep an eye out for that…

It’s not very often that I get my hands on a book quite so far out from the publication date, and even less often do I actually read something as soon as it arrives. Reece Carter’s upcoming middlegrade fantasy debut A Girl Called Corpse, however, is coming out in October, and not only have I already got it on my shelf (massive thanks to Allen & Unwin for sending me an early copy!) but I just couldn’t resist jumping straight in. And let me tell you, friends, this book is worth the hype it’s getting. In fact, it might just be one of the best books I’ve read so far…

There seem to be sooooo many amazing books coming out at the moment that, to be honest, I’m having some trouble keeping up with the reading and reviewing and sharing. Today I wanted to pop in and tell you a bit about a brand new middlegrade novel that I have been looking forward to for ooooh about a year. Sarah Armstrong’s Big Magic came out at the start of May, and is sitting right at the top of my tbr pile. Big thanks to Hardie Grant for sending me a copy! You might remember Sarah was kind enough to chat middlegrade reads with me back in the summer – you…

Perhaps I say this all the time, but I am OBSESSED with all the amazing middlegrade fantasy books out there right now! I had seen Skandar and the Unicorn Thief (by A.F. Steadman) around on social media a bit and was super keen to pick it up when it came out, so it was a wonderful surprise to find it in my mailbox from the lovely team at Simon & Shuster! I started reading yesterday morning and I honestly had trouble putting it down! I don’t want to say too much now (because then what will I put in my review? lol) but I’m so keen for everyone to read…

It was the perfect novel to take on my bus trip to Melbourne. I enjoy historical fiction novels so much (especially when they centre around the stories of women) and I find Lauren’s writing both incredibly beautiful and super immersive - I felt like part of the small community the book is set within and was completely caught up in the story. All the Bees in the Hollows is Lauren’s debut novel - I also adored her second book, The Woman in the Seal Skin, which I read earlier this year!
I can’t wait to see what she writes next 🤩🐝🦭

🐝 All the Bees in the Hollows by @laurenkeeganwriter
💫 Time Travel for Beginners by @jaclynmoriarty
🧊 Under Story by @chloekbenjamin

Are three books too many for a three-day trip? In my defense, I has 8 hours of bus travel on Friday, and was part through Time Travel already - I finished right on the halfway mark of the bus ride (adored it - everyone MUST read) and read most of All the Bees in the Hollows before I arrived. Then I made decent progress on Under Story while I waited for my flight!

How many books do you pack for a weekend away?
