    Friday Favourites:: 2 September

    September 2, 2022 /

    Friends! Happy September! Happy Spring! AND, at our school this week, HAPPY BOOK FAIR! I think soooo many of us have such wonderful memories of the Scholastic book fair arriving at school and setting up like a magical moving book store full of books and pens and posters. It’s such a delight as an adult to see that magic still exists, and – judging by the kids I’ve seen this week – is still every bit as exciting! I popped into our school library today to help pack up the book fair (it arrives in metal boxes on wheels that open out into shelves!) and had a good look around…

    Happy Book week everyone! I’ve had such a nice week celebrating children’s books, starting with the CBCA award announcements last Friday which I watched live on the CBCA YouTube page here – I may have had a little tear or two watching the amazing writers and illustrators find out their books had won! You can see the full list of winners here. I always love seeing people share book week costumes – either their finished costumes or their tips about how to create them. Some of my favourites this year were the Worst Week Ever and Llamas in Pyjamas ideas on Matt Cosgrove’s website, the Real Pigeons costume my friend…

    I’ve been super bust this week with reading and working on reviews, as I’m determined to get through some of the (many) books that have been hanging out on my NetGalley shelf for way to long. I really only request books that I want to read, so they are all titles I’m interested in, but it just gets a bit overwhelming when a bunch of requests come through at once (kind of like when all the library holds come in at once!). So, that does mean you can expect to see lots of new reviews on backlist books (a lot of them likely to be Christmassy) over the next little…

    I have a big, exciting weekend ahead, with the Canberra Writers Festival being held over the next few days. I’m planning to get to a couple of events and am sure I’ll have lots to say about it next week. It has been a funny week that has disappeared but dragged at the same time! Winter seems to be having its second wind, and the weather can’t seem to make up it’s mind between being sunny or wet, but it has been pretty cold! One of my favourite things in the past week or so though has been seeing my garden start to look like spring. I have daffodils and…

    We’ve had a really quiet week here – it has been wet and wintry and I’ve kind of just wanted to hibernate! One of my favourite thinks this week was catching up with my lovely friend Holly from The Hole Solution for a mending morning at a local cafe. It was the most miserable, cold, wet morning but we were in a warm cosy pace and honestly it was the loveliest way to spend a morning (I mean, look how cosy in the photo!) I didn’t have any mending along, but I did take my new crochet project, which I am kind of madly in love with. My daughter has…

    Happy Friday everyone! It’s a beautiful winter morning in Canberra – I love these cold mornings that turn into still, sunny, blue sky days. Jack (the cat) and I are sitting out on our patio, soaking in the sunshine and enjoying all the little signs that spring isn’t far off.I have a bit of a mix of things to share that have made me smile this week – I hope there will be something there that takes your fancy too! A little while ago I signed up to the Three Mills Bakery collective – a monthly subscription box. I love their breads and pastries, and we’ve been ordering from them…

    Hello! It has been a little while since I’ve been here! I was unwell at the start of June and have really had some trouble getting back into the swing of things, both with reading and writing and sleeping, and it has really thrown me out of whack! I have been feeling a lot more like myself over the past week or so though, and now that school holidays are done I’m keen to get back to some of my routines, including popping in here regularly again – and I felt like a Friday favourites post would be a perfect way to get back into it. Previously I’ve tried to…

    Happy Friday and almost June everyone! We’ve had kind of a funny week this week – the weekend was busy with voting and I took an all day watercolour painting class on Sunday, then we had a day off school on Monday and I worked a short day Tuesday because I wasn’t feeling great and hello suddenly it’s Friday again! Our long weekend came at the perfect time, and we made sure that we did as little as possible and made the most of being home together. Something that I’m absolutely loving at the moment is getting to share my love of reading with my 8 yr old. Like many…

    Hello! It’s school holidays here and we are up to our eyeballs in books and lego and sleep-ins and Easter preparations. Something that I’ve been loving doing with my daughter on our lazy school holiday days is getting our craft on with some Easter themed cross stitches. I love the entire process, from tracking down patterns to collecting the colours, and the stitching itself providing a kind of meditation with the repetition of the stitches. We’ve been inspired to get into cross stitch in particular by lovely Mel from A Cosy Reader Designs, who regularly streams her cross stitching projects on her Twitch channel Hey It’s Mel B. Let me…

    Happy Friday friends! Don’t they just keep speeding by? I have something that I found quite heart warming to share in my favourites today!I feel like I’ve mentioned before that I spent my summer reading Aussie fantasy novels for the Aurealis Awards – you can see some of the titles I read in the photo there. This week the short lists were announced and I have absolutely loved loved seeing so many fabulous local books and authors celebrated, and seeing how excited the community has been about the nominations. You can check out the short lists for all of the categories here.I can’t wait for the announcement of the winners!…

I read @laurenkeeganwriter’s ALL THE BEES IN THE H I read @laurenkeeganwriter’s ALL THE BEES IN THE HOLLOWS 🐝 last weekend - and loved it! It was the perfect novel to take on my bus trip to Melbourne. I enjoy historical fiction novels so much (especially when they centre around the stories of women) and I find Lauren’s writing both incredibly beautiful and super immersive - I felt like part of the small community the book is set within and was completely caught up in the story. All the Bees in the Hollows is Lauren’s debut novel - I also adored her second book, The Woman in the Seal Skin, which I read earlier this year!
I can’t wait to see what she writes next 🤩🐝🦭
Spending the weekend in Melbourne meant I was face Spending the weekend in Melbourne meant I was faced with the age old dilemma of how many books to pack. I was away from Friday morning to Sunday night and took these three:
🐝 All the Bees in the Hollows by @laurenkeeganwriter
💫 Time Travel for Beginners by @jaclynmoriarty
🧊 Under Story by @chloekbenjamin

Are three books too many for a three-day trip? In my defense, I has 8 hours of bus travel on Friday, and was part through Time Travel already - I finished right on the halfway mark of the bus ride (adored it - everyone MUST read) and read most of All the Bees in the Hollows before I arrived. Then I made decent progress on Under Story while I waited for my flight!

How many books do you pack for a weekend away?
