I’ve talked before about our approach to using books as an Advent countdown – I like to wrap four books (one for each Sunday in Advent), and then keep all our favourite picture books in a basket by the tree, and others on the shelf to pick up all through the season (more on Advent here and our book basket here). Today, though, I want to talk about Advent books – where the book itself is a kind of countdown calendar.
I love the idea of creating a quiet December ritual where we sit together and read for a bit every evening and, this year I’ve picked out 3 books I’m hoping to dip into with her each day. Check them out below.
Step Father Christmas by L.D. Lapinski
I love the idea of a story broken into daily parts to tell in the lead up to Christmas! I know in Denmark the TV networks make ‘Christmas Calendar’ shows each year which start on 1 December and there’s an episode each day until Christmas and I would love something like that here – I’m not sure why it hasn’t caught on in other places! Step Father Christmas gives us this same idea but in book form, promising A Festive Countdown in 25 Chapters. I’m a big fan of Lapinski’s Strangeworlds Travel Agency series, so I’m really excited to get stuck into this one!
It’s 25 days until Christmas . . .
And 10-year-old Harper gets a surprise when Mum announces she’s bringing her new boyfriend Nick home for the holidays!
Nick seems nice enough. But why do strange Christmassy things happen whenever he’s around? Like snow falling only in the family’s garden? Or a reindeer suddenly appearing on the roof?!
Harper’s convinced that Nick must be Father Christmas! And if her mum and older brother won’t believe her, she’ll just have to find a way to prove it herself . . .
Christmas is Coming: An Advent Book
We’ve had this one for a few years now, and it is a lovely one to dip in and out of during the season, with lots of inspiration and ideas for fun activities to do. The illustrations are so beautiful that it is really one of those books that I look forward to seeing each year when December rolls around.
Every day of December brings a delightful new Christmas tradition in this keepsake advent book. Each flap on the cover of the book reveals a clue to a festive activity that can be found inside the pages. It might be a recipe for a delicious homemade treat, instructions for a cosy craft, a game to play, a carol to sing, or a beautifully illustrated story to read with the whole family.
This inviting twist on the traditional advent calendar is perfect for families who love to put their own spin on celebrating the holidays, offering fun-filled activities that can be fondly shared together year after year.
The Jolly Christmas Postman by Janet and Allan Ahlberg
The Jolly Christmas Postman is new to us this year and is maybe more of a pull out and read on Christmas Eve sort of book than strictly a countdown book, but with all the bits and pieces inside I’m hoping it might be one that buys us 5 or 10 minutes of quiet at least on some of those busy December days.
The Jolly Postman has a busy day ahead. It’s Christmas Eve in Fairy-Tale Land and there’s plenty of post for him to deliver!
There’s a card for Baby Bear, a game appropriately called ‘Beware’ for Red Riding Hood from Mr Wolf, a get-well jigsaw for Humpty Dumpty and many more! But, can he deliver it all by Christmas?
Little hands will love opening the envelopes to read the post in this magical story, full of festive, fairy tale surprises!
I’d love to know whether you have favourite Christmas countdown books that you look forward to reading each year, or maybe something I should add to my collection for next year?
