2019 Reading Goals
Hello and happy Monday! It’s a long weekend here this week, and I’ve had a wonderfully lazy few days full of coffee, kitties, books, and brunch! With the New Year starting I’ve been thinking quite a bit about reading goals, but here we are almost in February already and I’m still not really sure where I stand in terms of setting goals for this year. I’ve mentally split the types of things I’m thinking about setting goals around into a few categories, and I thought I’d talk about them a bit here today. Firstly there’s the Goodreads challenge, which is about how many books you are aiming to read overall…

Read Harder Challenge :: Update
Hello!Here we are over halfway through the year, so I thought it was a good time to check in with how I’m doing with the Book Riot Read Harder Challenge! First, a little reminder of what the challenge is about. The Read Harder Challenge is an annual reading challenge hosted by Book Riot. The challenge encourages participants to do exactly what it says – read harder – by reading books to meet each of 24 different tasks, with a particular emphasis on increasing the diversity of books read, and reading outside one’s comfort zone. (You can read more about it on the Book Riot website here). You can see this…

Read Harder Challenge update
Yesterday I started reading Katie Fforde’s new Christmas short story collection, The Christmas Stocking and Other Stories. I picked this up not only because I’m all about the festive reads at the moment, but also because it does double duty by ticking off one of my outstanding tasks for the Book Riot Read Harder Challenge – Read a collection of stories by a woman. And of course being able to check one more off my list is making me feel like I might actually be able to finish the challenge (because in my future planning imagination I can read at least 3 times quicker than in real life lol). So far I…

Read Harder Challenge update
Would it be too much of a cliché for me to start this by asking whether anyone can believe we have passed the halfway mark of the year already? I’ve enjoyed hearing (reading) people’s thoughts on their reading year so far, and thought it would be good to check in with where I’m up to in the Book Riot Read Harder Challenge. The titles in regular font I’ve read, and the ones in italics are things I’m planning to read. Read a book about sports – Breaking the Mould Read a debut novel – The Dry Read a book about books – The Burning Page Read a book set in…

True story :: non-fiction books & memoirs
This month I’m participating in Book Riot‘s photo challenge #riotgrams over on Instagram and today’s photo prompt is ‘True Stories’. To be honest, I’ve really only started reading non-fiction, including memoirs and biographies, pretty recently – and mostly thanks to tasks in the 2016 and 2017 Book Riot Read Harder Challenges. Today’s photo prompt got me thinking about some of the non-fiction I have really loved reading over the past 6 months or so, and so I thought I’d share here three of the best non-fiction books I’ve read recently(ish)… The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks I actually read this one almost exactly a year ago! The story of Henrietta Lacks is horrifying and…

Book Riot Read Harder Challenge
About eighteen months ago, I came across the Book Riot podcasts and website. It hadn’t really occurred to me to listen to podcasts, with the exception of one a friend was recording about knitting, until I saw a list of bookish ones on a craft blog, and on listening to Book Riot’s main podcast and All the Books I was hooked. Discovering Book Riot and listening to/reading their content has really changed my reading life in a number of ways, but especially in terms of the diversity of what I read now. Before I was reading almost exclusively. Which was fine – I loved YA, and was happy reading, and still…
