    BOOK STACK :: Keeping the kids entertained

    December 28, 2021 /

    Now that the excitement of Christmas is starting to settle (although, full disclosure, I like to keep it going for the full 12 days through to 6 Jan!) we’re starting to think about settling into school holidays. Like many people around the country – and the world I guess – we’re laying pretty low right now, and between mostly hanging about home and my partner and I being back ‘at’ work (from home) next week we are looking for things to keep our daughter entertained through the next few weeks that aren’t just screen based. Obviously I’m throwing books at her left right and centre, and so I thought I’d…

    What’s your kid reading Wednesday

    May 5, 2021 /

    I had fun with my post from a few weeks ago about what my seven year old was reading, so I thought it might be good to make it a semi-regular sort of thing. I might call it “What’s your kid reading Wednesday” , because I do like the alliteration, even if it’s a bit of a stretch. A is really into graphic novels right now – she gets through them in a single sitting but then reads them over and over again. Here are her 3 latest reads: Pizza and Taco: Who’s the Best? by Stephen ShaskanBest friends are the BEST! But WHO is the BEST? Is it Pizza…

    Kidlit :: Pepper Creek Ponies: A New Friend :: Jess Black & Serena Geddes

    February 24, 2021 /

    When Abby moves from the city to the country, she misses her old life. Despite her fear of horses, she visits Pepper Creek Pony Club in the hope of making friends. But Abby quickly learns that being a horse-girl is harder than she thought. Will Abby ever make a new friend? Ok, so we all know I have a soft spot for pony books, and this one – Pepper Creek Ponies: A New Friend – was a really sweet read!It is a fairly short chapter book, perfect for building the confidence of newly independent readers, especially as the cute illustrations scattered throughout also help bring the story to life. I…

    Kidlit :: CAT KID COMIC CLUB :: DAV PILKEY

    February 3, 2021 /

    Cat Kid Comic Club is the first book in a BRAND NEW graphic novel series featuring Pilkey’s fan favourite character Li’l Petey who, along with friends Flippy the Fish and Molly, try to teach twenty-one baby frogs how to create their own comics. Cat Kid Comic Club was my first experience with Dav Pilkey’s work, although my daughter is familiar with Dog Man and Captain Underpants, and we both really enjoyed it! My daughter was completely engrossed in this one – she read it in a single sitting, and tells me it was excellent, she would recommend it and she loved the toilet humour (natch). I loved that it sparked…

    CHRISTMASSY :: GIFT GUIDE :: Junior/Newly Independent Readers

    December 2, 2020 /

    We have had such a wonderful reading year this year – my almost 7 year old has really got in the reading groove, and her independent reading skills (and love of reading!) seem to grow every day. We’re in the stage now where she has a book within arms reach at most times, whether its when she should be getting ready for school, on the 3 minute car trip, or under the blankets with a torch after lights out. I thought I’d share some of her favourite books from the year that I’d recommend if you’re looking for gifts for the little books worms in your life. I’ve got a…

    August 7, 2020 /

    Hello! Today it’s my turn on the Books on Tour blog tour for Max Booth’s latest adventure: Max Booth Future Sleuth: Chip Blip by Cameron Macintosh and Dave Atze. I was lucky enough to be part of the tour for the previous Max Booth book, Film Flip, which I loved (you can see my review here) so I was super excited to be part of this one too. This is the fifth book in the Max Booth Future Sleuth series, which follows Super Sleuth Max Booth in the year 2424 as he uncovers the secrets of mysterious 20th Century gadgets, with the help of his faithful, but slightly neurotic robodog…

    Kidlit :: Disney FROZEN Beginnings

    February 28, 2020 /

    I think I mentioned last week that I’ve been keeping a particular eye on junior fiction lately, with my 6 year old daughter Amelia just starting to move into independent reading, and – given that we’ve had our share of Frozen fever here – I don’t think there are many titles that could be further into our wheelhouse than these Disney Frozen Beginnings books!  These are junior/beginner reader chapter books about Anna and Elsa before the events of their movie. ELSA’S ICY RESCUEBefore she was Queen of Arendelle, Elsa was a young princess with a magical gift. Elsa cannot wait to spend time with her family at their summer home.…
