BOOK STACK :: Keeping the kids entertained
Now that the excitement of Christmas is starting to settle (although, full disclosure, I like to keep it going for the full 12 days through to 6 Jan!) we’re starting to think about settling into school holidays. Friday again – can you believe it? This week has been exciting with the blood moon, and hitting the middle of the school term. We also had a birthday party on the weekend, which have been fairly few and far between the past 12 months on account of lockdowns etc. When my daughter is heading off to a party I always like to include a book in the birthday present, which leads me to my Friday favourite for the week – our local comic book store. I had fun with my post from a few weeks ago about what my seven year old was reading, so I thought it might be good to make it a semi-regular sort of thing. Kidlit :: CAT KID COMIC CLUB :: DAV PILKEY
Cat Kid Comic Club is the first book in a BRAND NEW graphic novel series featuring Pilkey’s fan favourite character Li’l Petey who, along with friends Flippy the Fish and Molly, try to teach twenty-one baby frogs how to create their own comics. Cat Kid Comic Club was my first experience with Dav Pilkey’s work, although my daughter is familiar with Dog Man and Captain Underpants, and we both really enjoyed it! My daughter was completely engrossed in this one – she read it in a single sitting, and tells me it was excellent, she would recommend it and she loved the toilet humour (natch). I have been seeing Pumpkin Heads – a gorgeous graphic novel by Rainbow Rowell and Faith Erin Hicks – all over bookstagram this month, and last week I finally caved and bought it. Free Comic Book Day 2017
We have a fantastic local comic book store which we visit pretty much every Saturday morning (Sam has a standing weekly order with them). It’s always a fun part of the weekend – while Sam checks out the new releases Amelia and I have a browse around and she points out characters she knows on the comics and merch, and has a chat with the guys who work there (who have know her since she was about 18 months old and Sam used to go in with her on his chest in the baby carrier on his days off work).
